Xanadu
A roller rink and party venue inspired by the skate rinks of the Midwest.
Xanadu is a roller rink and venue in Bushwick. Inspired by the skate rinks of the Midwest, it is a whimsical, kitsch party space for all ages.
Every protective element was designed for people moving on wheels.
01 The assignment
Design a rink that works as a nightlife venue and an all-ages destination at once, where every surface has to be safe for people moving on wheels.
02 The design response
Safety came first without giving up the playfulness. Protective elements are built from unconventional materials suited to skate-based navigation: padded curved banquettes, rounded column seats, soft-edged counters and a wave-form ceiling that carries lighting around the rink. A palette of pink, lilac, teal and amber sets the mood.
03 How it operates
Lockers, a bar and lounge seating sit off the rink so skaters, drinkers and spectators each have their own territory without crossing paths.
04 Materials and custom elements
Padded vinyl upholstery, curved laminate millwork, terrazzo-patterned surfaces, LED cove lighting, hand-painted murals and a polished rink floor.
