Sonny's combines a retro pizza diner with a neighbourhood craft beer and wine garden.

Named among the most beautiful restaurants to open in D.C. in 2019 by Eater.

01 The assignment

A family-friendly pizzeria by day, a neighbourhood drinking spot by night, with a patio that would work in more than one season.

02 The design response

Inside, teal booths, a patterned ceiling, a tiled counter and a wall of framed photographs set a warm retro tone. Outside, a large patio is serviced by a vintage Citroën milk truck, and a covered pergola provides protection and comfort year round.

03 How it operates

The entire design was completed before the client took possession of the space, so construction could begin the day the keys were handed over.

04 Materials and custom elements

Vinyl-upholstered booths, patterned laminate, glazed tile counter, reclaimed timber, brick pavers and a timber pergola.

05 Getting it built

Design was complete before possession, compressing the schedule between lease start and opening.
